Eligibility to Contribute to a Roth IRA

Q: My client contributes to both a 403(b) and 457(b). Does this make him ineligible to contribute to a Roth IRA? Also, he is over age 70½. Can Roth IRA contributions be made after that age?

A: The only criteria to determine eligibility for the annual contribution Roth IRA is adjusted gross income. Thus, if your client is a joint filer and has AGI under $184,000, he can contribute to the Roth IRA. This is true even if he is over age 70½.
