New Heights of Professionalism at NTSA 403(b) Summit

The mark of a true professional is the determination to take your practice to the next level. One surefire step toward that goal is membership in NTSA and attendance at its annual NTSA 403(b) Summit. PlanMember Services has been a strategic industry partner of NTSA since 1997, and as part of our financial commitment to the organization and its advocacy efforts, all financial professionals licensed with PlanMember Securities are automatic members of NTSA.

NTSA membership has grown to more than 3,300 individual members. Its NTSA Net website and weekly newsletter, the 403(b) Advisor, touch more than 3,000 NTSA members every week. NTSA is very active with state and federal advocacy programs and PlanMember — along with other strategic partners — contributes to those efforts. NTSA also introduced the NTSA Elite Advisor Program in 2014; for information on the 2014 and 2015 winners, click here.

This year’s Summit in June included three intensive days of speakers, networking and workshops at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville.

Topics covered included auto enrollment, the DOL’s proposed fiduciary rule, robo advisors, online marketing, TDFs, index funds, IRAs, tips for running a practice from small to large, among others.

“This year we took each general session and broke it down to three break-out sessions led by industry experts,” explains Robert Young, president of a PlanMember Financial Center in Phoenix and current president of NTSA. “After that, one person from each session reviewed the highlights, which allowed everyone to get at least a high-level view of what happened. Since attendees can only go to one session, the recap lets them hear some information on the other two.”

Richard Ford, PlanMember’s senior vice president and chief marketing officer, found the Summit “one of the absolute best NTSA conferences I’ve experienced since I started attending these annual events in 1990.”

Veterans and newcomers alike shared similar sentiments.

“This was the first summit I’ve attended and I’ll certainly be back for future events,” says Chris Janeway, a financial advisor with PlanMember Financial Group in Santa Barbara. “I got a better understanding and appreciation for NTSA as an organization and excellent updates on the industry’s direction. The coordination of advisors, vendors and broker/dealers all in one place, pushing for best practices together, was a huge benefit to me. I took away invaluable practice management and growth ideas that will benefit my business moving forward. The opportunity to learn from a select group of top performers in our industry was priceless.”

“The NTSA Summit is a great look into the future of our business and a great place to discuss the changing political and demographic environment,” says Martin Adams, co-owner of Innovative Financial Solutions, a PlanMember Financial Center in Birmingham, Alabama. “We have fewer professionals serving our retiring population and our younger workforce, who face tough retirement issues.”

Bruce Allen, president of Old Dominion Insurance and Investments, a PlanMember Financial Center in Winchester, Va., is relatively new to PlanMember but not to NTSA, having planned several past summits. “I always enjoy the smaller breakout sessions and getting other advisors’ or providers’ ideas on trying something new,” he says. “It’s good to see and reconnect with so many familiar faces and friends that I’ve made over the years.”

Next year’s summit promises to be even better.

“We have a new theme for next year that will be totally different from anything NTSA has ever done,” says Young. “We’ll be looking for only the best of the best to attend. We’re not trying to exclude anyone but we are going to send personal invitations to the best in our business. You can still attend if you don’t get an invitation but you’d need to get an invite from someone who did. Again, we’re looking to make this a conference for the ‘masters’ in our business and those who want to become masters.”

So save the date: Next year’s NTSA 403(b) Summit will be Jan. 21-23, 2016, at Lowe’s Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, Arizona.

Your next level awaits.
