Hatch to Talk Tax Reform with Chamber

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) will deliver remarks at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce headquarters in Washington, D.C. on Feb. 1, 2017 to discuss the Finance Committee’s agenda for the 115th Congress, including ongoing efforts to remake the tax code with changes to key retirement provisions.

Hatch is a key player in the Republican-led Congress’s work towards an overhaul of the tax code this year. In December, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) indicated that Affordable Care Act repeal and tax reform would be the two major priorities for the session, and both would be achieved through reconciliation, a filibuster-proof process requiring only a simple majority. This puts Democrats in a tough position and weakens their ability to push back on proposals they find objectionable.

Hatch and McConnell are likely to get strong administration support in their efforts. On Jan. 24, Treasury Secretary nominee Steve Mnuchin said in his nomination hearing before the Senate Finance Committee, “We should, in a bipartisan fashion, work to increase retirement savings for all Americans,” which he described as “an essential feature of overall tax reform.” He asserted that simplification of the tax code would help grow Americans’ retirement plans.
